Afghanistan is the central front in the war on terror. But perhaps we'd be wiser to leave bin Laden in his cave, abandon the wrong-headed misnomer of a "war on terror," and give up attempting to build a new democracy on the other side of the world.

Sensational pieces cause consumers to have unrealistic expectations when they look for a new home, which in the long run will only hurt our economy.

Courtney Love's new album was supposed to hit stores yesterday, but Nobody's Daughter has been postponed. Along with recording issues, Courtney has been consumed tracking down a vast embezzling scheme.

Since the free fall was to a large degree tied to loss of confidence in the system, a boost to people's confidence can stop the fall. What can provide that boost? January 20.

How about a smart-plus-greedy-equals-stupid tax? We will save it for the absolutely inevitable moment in the not-so-distant future when Wall Street will forget the lessons of 2008.

It's not just that McCain can't relate to have nots, it's that he doesn't really want to. He wants to pull the levers that Phil Gramm and others tell him work best, and he lacks the motivation to question whether these levers actually work.

The foundations, the nonprofit sector and the states can play important roles in dealing with poverty, but the federal government by far is the biggest and most important player on the block.

Piven's abrupt departure from Speed the Plow was a low in the history of Broadway. Every actor who ever uttered the edict "the show must go on" rolled his eyes, or rolled over in his grave.

Check back weekly for my Recession Trend Tracker. If Us Weekly and The Economist had a love child, it would look like this.

I know if I was in this situation I would want to know all the facts before walking away and living in coulda, shoulda, woulda land.
Nouriel Roubini, 10.11.2008
It will take a significant change in leadership of economic policy and very radical, coordinated policy actions among all advanced and emerging market economies to avoid this economic and financial disaster.

If any citizen of this country presents a false loan application to a bank and then gets approved and the bank loses money, that applicant may well be prosecuted for bank fraud.
Robert Weissman, 01.22.2008
The current crisis is the predictable (and predicted) result of a massive U.S. housing bubble, which itself can be traced in part to global economic imbalances that could have been prevented.

Did a Fox news executive decide to go after Congressman Frank because O'Reilly was embarrassed in front of 800,000 people who caught the meltdown on YouTube?

You have had Democrat Mayors for over 35 years who have done nothing to attract new business to Detroit.
The economy goes bad for 9 months and Bush gets the blame and Republicans get tossed.
How about 35 years of Detroit decline and they keep electing Democrats.
And the lack of a coherent urban and industrial policy doesn't have anything to do with the decline of a major city. Grow up kool-aid drinker.
well NYC has been electing Republicans for the last 16 years and 8 years of Bush and the city may go broke. Again
Oh, for Pete's sake. How much control does the mayor in YOUR town have over major industry and the regional economy? And what is YOUR mayor doing to force businesses in your town to become more profitable?
Please . . . educate us all about mayoral power in this situation.
It's already Detroit and the old USSR combined.Be afraid,Jimbo.
