The Race To The Bottom has crushed everyone in the Middle Class.

In the past thirty years the men and women Working The Line have watched their wages and benefits shrink while The Suits' 'Compensation Packages' and Golden Parachutes have grown at a pace akin to cancer.

Steel-Toe Joe & Rosie The Riveter EARN their wages, they bring value to the Company with every car that passes through their station on the line. What value have the Suits brought to the Company?

Good article, James. I live in car country.

It's sad that even people are calling for the Wal-Martization of the American workforce by blaming auto workers for having jobs with good pay and benefits. Our economy is collapsing because we don't have more good paying jobs in this country. We need to be standing up for the American workforce, not tearing it down.

I know there's a few misguided people on here talking against the bailout. I just want to ask them what decent economist is out there saying that it wouldn't be catastrophic if GM failed? Which one is saying we wouldn't be in an economic clusterfuck if the auto companies crashed?

What economist says we won't be in an economic clusterfuck if they do bail them out and still fail? Who guarantees they will succeed?

The dismal situation the car companies are in is certainly unfortunate for Michiganders. While the car execs should be in line for a heaping helping of blame, the workers should accept a share for themselves. Anyone who has read a newspaper or carried on an intelligent discussion about economics in the past 20 years ought to have known $25/hour wages plus Cadillac benefits to engage in unskilled labor was not a sustainable situation. And when they were standing on the line piecing together SUVs that get 15 mpg and cost $40k retail, did they ask themselves what might happen if gas prices rose or the economy went in the tank? Or did they continue voting for politicians who were in the tank for the companies and union reps who told them only what they wanted to hear? They were living a lifestyle that became unrealistic, and the writing had been on the wall for decades. If someone wanted to pay me that kind of money for that work I'd do it. But I'd be sure to set some aside knowing that gravy train wasn't permanent.

Why of course it's the workers fault that Detroit made big fat cars.

Who do you think you are kidding?

I knew I wouldn't have to go very far to find a comment blamming the workers.

As I post this, the very first comment is one of those.

"unskilled labor"

Let's see you change a transmission!
