What McCain's speech did not have was the substance to back up the centrist reformism he needs to try to upset Obama.

Almost every single thing Palin said in her speech the other night turns out to be just a lie -- and it doesn't matter. She now has 58% favorability among the public. And she has a story.
McCain told the nation that he wants to play nice now, to change the culture of Washington. He might want to run that by his running mate.
Wednesday night after Sarah Palin's speech, I went to bed with a pit in my stomach that reminded me not of November, 2004, but rather October, 2003.
The Right's non-party machinery now suddenly has a laser-like focus on creating a "surge" of voters for McCain-Palin. This machinery is vast, strategically targeted, exceptionally well-financed, and ready to rumble.
In choosing Sarah Palin of Alaska for Vice President, the Republicans have made a cynical but clever choice. At least they think it is clever.
She's exactly the kind of leader America needs: the kind that will always put country first -- even if that country happens to be The Republic of Alaska.
Republican luminaries including John McCain's 20-something daughter, Meghan, tried to elude my line of questioning.
In a breathtakingly puzzling move, John McCain showed terrible judgment by selecting first term Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. ...
Walking through the Xcel Energy Center, I encountered a group of African-American Republicans, and asked them for their take on the historic nature of Barack Obama's nomination. Check it out:
The mainstream media consensus -- and we know just how wrong the consensus usually is -- is that Palin's speech has consolidated and galvanized the conservative base.
The Palin nomination is not about external realities and what Democrats call "issues," but about the symbolic mechanisms of the political mind -- the worldviews, frames, metaphors, cultural narratives, and stereotypes.
Now that you have nominated a real life black person and proved you are not racist...
Do you think the Republicans would lay off of Obama if his 17 year-old daughter had gotten pregnant out of wedlock? You know the answer to that question. Everyone does.
We're a magazine that thrives on babies, intriguing women and scandals. For this particular week, our potential vice president just happened to fit the bill. (Sorry, Angelina).
If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're "reckless." A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a "maverick."

Why isn't the media other than the National Enquirer reporting about Sarah's alleged affair with her husband's business partner, Scott Richter? If anyone wants to see it, go to smoking gun.
I, too, was struck by the falseness of McCain continually saying he wanted to end partisan rancor during his RNC speech, after having listened to the speakers at the convention sneer at the Democratic party, community organizers, etc. You can't pretend to want to change the atmosphere in Washington to get things done and still get away with these schoolyard style attacks. Attack us on issues. The Republicans are bringing mud to a gun fight.
YES!!!
If Obama hits them like this for the next 60 days - he'll win.
Rick Davis:
"She"ll be made available for interviews when it is in the best interests of the campaign"
THAT SAYS IT ALL
As a voter you need ask yourslf only two questions and CAREFULLY consider your answers.
1. Do you agress with Palin's ideology? YES or NO
2. Is she ready to be President? NO or MAYBE (Yes is not an option at his point)
THIS is the kind of talking points we need to see from Obama: simply telling it like it is. This is very gratifying to see... I'm starting to like the guy again.
