Christy Turlington Burns Says C-Sections As The Norm In U.S. Are 'Dangerous For Both Moms And Children'

Christy Turlington Burns spent many years on catwalks and in the pages of magazines, but these days the supermodel is spending her time advocating for the safety of mothers across the globe through her Every Mother Counts campaign.

During an interview with HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressey-Tehrani, Turlington Burns discussed the dangers of "overmedicalization" of the birthing process in the United States that introduces "more interventions" than necessary.

"It's the norm in this country to have a Cesarean section, and that is dangerous for both moms and children," she said. "Women are more likely to have a ruptured uterus if they've had multiple C-sections because there's more scar tissue."

Turlington Burns added that in many poor countries, only 5 percent of babies are delivered via C-section, but the rate is upwards of 35 percent in some U.S. states.
