Disney+ be damned, Hilary Duff is taking âLizzie McGuireâ into her own hands.
While the official revival of the beloved series remains in limbo, Duff and the rest of the cast have reunited for a virtual table-read of one of the showâs most iconic episodes.
Duff shared the footage of the Zoom reunion on her Instagram page Monday, adding that this was the first time Lizzie, Gordo, Miranda and the rest of the gang were âtogether-ishâ in almost 18 years!â
Thatâs right, after much clamouring from fans, Adam Lamberg (Gordo), Lalaine (Miranda), Jake Thomas (Matt), Hallie Todd (Jo) and Robert Carradine (Sam) are all back together, albeit virtually, to help raise funds for charity.
âI got the most amazing phone call last week from Jake Thomas who played my brother Matt on âLizzie McGuire,â and he threw out having a virtual table read of one of our old episodes,â Duff explained. âI thought, âThereâs no better way to cure boredom and to provide a little bit of entertainment for everyone thatâs stuck at home.ââ
What better episode to revisit than âBetween a Rock and a Bra Place!â which aired 19 years ago Monday on the Disney Channel, and ranks as one of the seriesâ finest and most memorable outings.
In case you forgot, the episode has Lizzie and Miranda on the hunt for their first bras. Writers Nina and Jeremy Bargiel revealed on the Zoom call that the title proved to be a sticking point for the Disney Channel powers that be, who demanded that âyou can say the word [bra] twice, and you canât ever show one.â
It also featured this classic line of dialogue:
The cast tried their best to get through the script â Duff admitted everyone âcould not stop laughing reading lines from tween usâ â and even attempted to sing the seriesâ earworm of a theme song.
The reunion is likely the most weâll see from the âLizzie McGuireâ cast for the time being. The previously announced Disney+ revival hit a major snag when Duff and series creator Terri Minsky clashed with the streaming service over the vision for a more adult version of the beloved character.
After shooting the first two episodes, filming was indefinitely put on hiatus, while Minsky stepped down as showrunner.
Duff even spoke out about the behind-the-scenes drama and pushed for the revival to air on Hulu, as the new episodes, which reportedly featured sex and a cheating scandal, conflicted with Disneyâs family-friendly messaging.
âI feel a huge responsibility to honor fansâ relationship with Lizzie who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her,â Duff wrote in an Instagram post back in February. âIâd be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting realities of a 30 year oldâs journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. Itâs important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable.â
