Teenager Dies After Being Attacked By Shark In WA

The 17-year-old was surfing with her father when the animal struck.

A teenage girl has died after being attacked by a shark on Monday near Esperance, 720km south of Perth in Western Australia.

She was attacked while surfing with her father at Kelp Beds, approximately 3km east of Wylie Bay, at around 4pm (AWST).

Paramedics told the ABC that when they arrived at the scene the young girl had already been pulled from the water and a member of the public was administering CPR.

Seven News reported the girl, from Mandurah, was seriously mauled on one of her legs, leading to massive blood loss.

Earlier, Western Australian police confirmed that the 17-year-old was treated at Brandy Creek before being taken to Esperance hospital in a critical condition.

It is believed the girl sustained serious injuries to her leg in the attack and was unconscious when she was pulled from the water.

Local news are reporting Wylie Bay beach has been closed to the public. Kelp Beds, also known as "Kelpies", is a popular surf break that's reportedly a notorious spot for shark sightings.
