B.C. Doctors Prescribing Exercise On Customized Pads

B.C. Doctors Prescribing Exercise

Next time you visit your doctor, her or she may prescribe you something other than pills.

Prescription of Health, by Doctors of B.C., has physicians across the province prescribing exercise — there are even specially-designed prescription pads for it.

The initiative promotes Walk with your Doc, an event taking place on May 3, when doctors across B.C. host free walking events for their patients and the public.

As we all know, doctors know how to prescribe pills, but there’s no pill that can do all the things that physical activity does,” Dr. Ron Wilson, head of Doctors of B.C.'s athletics and recreation committee, told The Vancouver Sun.

Walk with your Doc was created in 2010 as part of the World Health Organization's annual Move For Your Health Day, which takes place each May, according to documents provided by Doctors of B.C. There are 100 doctors hosting walks around the province so far.

Patients who attend a walk will receive a free pedometer while supplies last. To find out what's happening in your area, click here.
