Veterans in Calgary will be able to take public transit for free on Remembrance Day after a last-minute decision by city council.
Coun. Sean Chu brought the urgent motion forward last week, proposing that veterans in uniform or those carrying veteran identification cards should ride free of charge, along with their family members.
His fellow councillors unanimously approved the idea at their meeting on Monday.
The move was first suggested by Calgarian veteran Christopher Blatch, who referenced Halifax's decision to offer free transit for veterans for the second consecutive year.
Blatch, a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, wrote that the move would ensure that veterans with lower incomes and limited mobility could still make it to Remembrance Day events.
The city is also offering free parking for all cars with veteran plates on Wednesday. All veterans and members of the Armed Forces and Coast Guard in B.C. have also been offered free transit for the day.
