Calgary Zoo Animal Deaths Reported In Flood's Aftermath (PHOTOS)

Deaths At The Calgary Zoo

Some animals at the Calgary Zoo did not survive the flood that devastated Calgary and much of Southern Alberta.

At least one peacock and many tropical fish did not survive the flood, the zoo said on Sunday.

"While trying to round them up, some birds flew up to rooftops and trees and simply couldn't be corralled," the zoo said in a statement. A necropsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death.

The fish, including tilapia and piranha, did not survive because the lack of power meant water quality could not be maintained.

Flooding At The Calgary Zoo

The flood forced the implementation of emergency plans at the Calgary Zoo, which is situated on an island near where the Elbow and Bow rivers meet. Zebras were moved to a wildlife conservation centre south of the city and two pot-bellied pigs were moved to the City's Animal Shelter. The rest of the animals remained at the zoo but many were moved to higher ground.

Clément Lanthier, the president and CEO of the Calgary Zoo, surveyed the zoo in a kayak on Friday and called it a surreal experience.

He said it was "one I thought I'd never have and hope never to repeat."

"In spite of the loss of the fish and a peacock, we are still counting our blessings that in the face of this natural disaster there have not been greater losses," the zoo's statement added.
