If your bedroom is multitasking, it ain't a good thing.

Sleep deprivation is a huge problem in Canada. In 2011, 40 per cent of us said we've experienced insomnia at some point. Of those many used aids ranging from prescription medication to natural products to alcohol to help them sleep.

Earlier this week Market Watch, reported that 44 per cent of Americans can't sleep due to stress from work. This is a trend that's increased over the last few decades, especially with more and more people taking work home with them.

Sleep deprivation is linked to a whole host of medical issues including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Recently, Dr. Andrew Lim of Sunnybrook Hospital linked sleep deprivation to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's and stroke.

Some people who can't sleep are suffering from sleep disorders, and they require significant interventions — for example, CPAP machines for sleep apnea. For most of us though, it could just be a matter of taking better care of ourselves.
