If you can handle the heat, adding hot peppers to a meal will give you an instant flavour boost.

From jalapenos to chili powder to dried habanero (watch out for the burn) adding small amounts of spice to your soups, curries or sauces is a great way to add flavour without overpowering the meal, says Steve Gill of Quesada Burritos & Tacos.

"This way you can gauge the level of heat and add more to intensify the flavour," he tells The Huffington Post Canada. "When shopping for fresh chili peppers, look for peppers with smooth skin and store them in a paper bag in a cool dry place. Don't just pick chilis for their heat level."

If spice isn't your thing, Gill says a good starting pepper is the jalapeno pepper.

"It can be chopped and served as a fresh garnish, it can be pickled or even stuffed and grilled on the barbecue," he adds.

And because of their versatility, peppers can be used fresh, dried or in powder form. In the slideshow below, Gill shares 10 ways to use 10 different types of peppers to make everything from salsas to oils to delicious boozy drinks.
