Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has resigned as the premier and leader of the Liberal party, amid a scandal over cancelled power plants in Oakville and Mississauga.
Alberta Premier Alison Redford issued a statement following the resignation, saying that she was surprised by the news.
“Premier McGuinty served the people of Ontario well for sixteen years as a statesman, a fierce defender of his province and a leader in confederation," she said.
"Our most recent conversations focused on Alberta and Ontario’s partnership and a shared interest in the growth and prosperity of Canada," she said, adding that she considered McGuinty a valuable colleague and a friend and had benefited from his views and opinions over the past year.
The resignation also came as a surprise for some Canadians, as McGuinty announced that it was time for "renewal" and new blood.
"I thank you for the honour of serving as your Leader and your Premier," he said, "In Ontario, the greatest province in the best country in the world."
