Don Iveson Mayor: Edmonton Councillor Wins Municipal Election

Video source: Global Edmonton

It wasn't a very close race and at the end of Monday night's municipal elections in Edmonton, Don Iveson was the clear winner to the mayor's chair.

At last count Monday night, Iveson had garnered more than 60 per cent of the popular vote.

He may literally be only half the age of Edmonton's outgoing mayor Stephen Mandel, but the 34-year-old Iveson, who had little problem convincing the majority of Edmonton voters to make him mayor, brings some solid political credibility to the role.

First politician to congratulate Iveson on his win was his southerly peer, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who said he was thrilled to hear of the win.

Iveson was first elected to council in 2007. But in his run for mayor, Iveson was able to set himself apart from the rest of the field by making himself visible both in person and in social media. Taking a page from Calgary's very popular Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Iveson even took part in a Reddit AMA, where Edmontonians were able to ask the mayor-to-be questions directly.

He was also often seen reaching out on Twitter, while maintaining a high-pace flesh-and-blood campaign.

Sustainability, smart growth and environmental concern are some of the topics the new mayor has worked for in the past.

Iveson had the lead on the polls leading up to the election, with Karen Leibovici running second and Kerry Diotte running third.

The two-term city councillor was the last of the leading contenders to throw his hat in the ring but quickly started to pull ahead of his two council colleagues.

Messages of jubilation and celebration quickly started to tie up Edmonton Twitter feeds, once it became clear that Iveson was too far ahead to catch.
