It's hard to escape the separate drug allegations involving Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and his brother, Toronto councillor Doug Ford, particularly in light of Saturday's report in The Globe and Mail, which suggests Doug was previously involved in illegally trafficking hashish.
After spending over a week publicly defending the mayor from his drug accusations, Doug Ford quickly refuted the Globe's article, giving interviews to KISS 92.5 FM, Global News, CP24 and additional news outlets. This represents a markedly different communications strategy from his brother Rob, who waited eight days to formally address Gawker and the Toronto Star's reports he was seen smoking crack cocaine on video.
"I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine," Rob Ford said, in the televised interview. "As for a video, I cannot comment on a video that I have never seen, or does not exist."
Yet online, the constant news saturation of the Ford brothers spawned a new hashtag, "#FordBrothersTVShows." National Post columnist Andrew Coyne started the Twitter spoof, tweeting, "So as a hashtag… #fordbrothersTVshows ? (Movies will also be accepted.)" on Saturday at 4:49 p.m. EST. Shortly after, several users chimed in with parodies of their own, including "Diff'rent Tokes," "Fordlandia," "Fordwalk Empire," "The Walking Politically Dead," "Chubby Little Liars," "Law and Forder," and "Hashpoint," among many others.
The hashtag #FordBrothersTVShows quickly began trending in Canada.
