If you walk into most salons, you might notice a pricing difference between the services offered for men and women. Especially when it comes to haircuts.
No matter the length of your hair, gender pricing is real. And frankly, a lot of people are sick of it. Including Kara's Urban Day Spa in Halifax.
As of June 1st, the salon has axed pricing and has offered a more gender-neutral cost at all three of their locations. Now, pricing on cuts will be determined by the length of someone's hair and how much time the haircut takes, not if you're a man or a woman.
In an interview with CBC, Kevyn Martell, the salon's new artistic director, talked about "how fairness is a great thing" and how more salons need to introduce gender-neutral policies.
"If I'm doing a pixie haircut on a woman or a short haircut on a man, it takes me the same amount of time to do it," explained Martell. "If it's a woman who has the same length of hair as a man, why are we charging her $20 more because she's a woman?"
The decision to introduce gender-neutral pricing came after Martell joined the salon a mere six weeks ago and began looking into how other salons were handling costs. After a quick Google search, he found only a few salons across the country have a gender-neutral policies.
"It doesn’t matter what gender you are," Martell told Halifax's The Coast. "It matters how long it takes for the service."
For that, Kara's will now offer three prices options, and they are all based on length — very short, above the shoulder and below the shoulder.
Now we're talking. Here's to hoping more salons across Canada follow suit.
