Jerry Bance Pees Into Mug, Conservative Candidate Becomes Internet Joke

Well, that's one way to make a splash in an election campaign.

Well, that's one way to make a splash in an election campaign.

The CBC revealed on Sunday that Conservative candidate Jerry Bance was caught on tape in 2012peeing into a homeowner's mug and emptying it into the sink while he was working as a contractor.

A statement from Bance released by the Conservative campaign says he "deeply regrets" his actions on that day.

"I take great pride in my work and the footage from that day does not reflect who I am as a professional or a person," Bance said.

Bance is currently running in the hotly contested riding of Scarborough Rouge River. The story comes a day before Stephen Harper is set to campaign in east Toronto. A media advisory from the Conservative campaign names two candidates who will join Harper, but does not mention Bance.

The footage was captured as part of a CBC Marketplace hidden-camera sting evaluating Toronto-area home repair services.

Twitter users quickly reacted to the gaffe with a torrent of jokes.

And wittier folks predictably coined#Peegate to label the scandal. The hashtag quickly became a trending topic on Twitter.

"Power & Politics" host Rosemary Barton sums up how many must feel about the fast and unexpected twist in Canada’s election season.
