Maja Paderewska Dead: Brother Charged With Murder

Students Mourn Slain Surrey Teacher

A 27-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his sister, 33-year-old Maja Paderewska, who was found dead in a Coquitlam home.

Jarek Paderewski, who was not known to police, was arrested at the scene and made his first court appearance on Monday.

Police were called to the townhouse on Sunday afternoon and found Paderewska's body, said a news release from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). The motive for the homicide is still unknown, said investigators.

Paderewska was a business education teacher at North Surrey Secondary School. Current and former students have been paying tribute to her online. They remembered her as a kind, encouraging teacher who was always smiling.

IHIT Sgt. Adam MacIntosh told CBC News that Paderewski lives at the Coquitlam townhouse with his parents, but his sister did not.
