New Words For 2015 Focus On Gender, Human Technology

The New Words Being Added To The Dictionary In 2015

This week, Dictionary.com added new words for 2015 to its online resource for spelling and definitions — and many of them may be terms you've never heard of before.

The site enlists lexicographers to determine what should be included, and they in turn look to everything from academic papers to pop culture to suggestions from readers for the final list.

Many of this year's words, unsurprisingly, focus on technology in its various forms, including one of our favourites, "glanceable" (information on a screen that can be understood at a glance — hello emojis!).

Other themes include gender, or more specifically, the lack thereof. As trans people increasingly start identifying as such publicly, knowing proper pronouns — as this video shows — as well as having common language that everyone should know will help move the conversation forward.

So whether it's learning a new concept thanks to a word (swatting!) or finally finding the descriptor you've been looking for (ship .. but not how you think), these terms and phrases should help you out almost every day.

Take a look at a selection of the words Dictionary.com has included so far in 2015. Is there any word you've been hearing that's missing from the list? Let us know in the comments below.
