Canadian entertainer Raffi Cavoukian has recorded a new anthem for the federal election, hoping it will galvanize voters to shake, shake, shake the Tories out.
Best known for children's songs like "Baby Beluga" and "The More We Get Together," Cavoukian is an outspoken critic of Stephen Harper and the Conservative party.
The election song, released on YouTube this week, is succinct:
"I want my Canada back
I want my Canada back
October 19th
We all can vote
Get our Canada back.
The more we vote together."
Cavoukian isn't shy about his political leanings on his very active Twitter account:
Cavoukian lives on Salt Spring Island, B.C., which was represented by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May.
Cavoukian has quite the repertoire of political compositions. In 2011, he sang a new verse of "Baby Beluga" in a message urging "beluga grads" to vote in that year's federal election.
"Now you've grown and you're on your way
Making waves in the boundless bay
With your shining light and your dreams alive
For the young you'll have one day.
Grown-up beluga
Grown-up beluga
Come and rock the boat
Please get out and vote
We need to hear you."
Later that fall, Cavoukian was so moved by late NDP leader Jack Layton's memorable letter to Canadians that he turned it into a 2011 tribute titled "Letter To A Nation."
It featured Layton's closing words as the chorus: "My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world."
