The Arctic is vast, rugged and beautiful. And it rarely appears more so than in a series of videos and photos that show as many as 3,000 reindeer crossing the barren landscape of the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.)
Northern resident Jackie Challis posted photos and video to social media on Monday that showed the animals crossing the frozen Mackenzie River between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk.
The crossing is an annual event in which spring herders move the reindeer from their winter grounds at Jimmy Lake to their breeding area at Richards Island, CBC News reported.
Videographer David Stewart also captured the herd as they moved across the ice road.
Meanwhile, photographer Zoe Ho caught this spectacular photo:
"Totally beautiful and moving, especially to see the 3,000 strong herd and the relationship of the animals to their herders," Ho said of the sight on her Facebook page.
