The ongoing circus at Toronto City Hall got even stranger on Wednesday after a prankster interrupted a live media scrum to announce he had drugs for embattled Mayor Rob Ford.
The young man disrupted Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong as he updated the press about the flooding on the Don Valley Parkway.
“I got crack for the mayor,” he said, holding up a bag containing a white substance. “I’m Somali. I’m like the guys he got caught on video with. I came through for the mayor.”
Minnan-Wong appeared speechless as news network CP24 quickly cut away.
On Tuesday, Ford’s 44th birthday, a group of protesters brought a cake to City Hall with the words “Happy Birthday Rob Ford, Please Resign” written in frosting.
The demonstration marked the first time protesters went directly to City Hall to urge Ford to quit, the Toronto Sun reported.
“I’ve come to City Hall because today it is the birthday of the mayor of Toronto and we want to celebrate that but we also want to ask him as we wish him a happy birthday to please do the right thing and resign,” said protester Christine Brubaker.
It also appears the ongoing controversy — which now includes accusations Ford knew about the location of the alleged crack video — is starting to take a toll on councillors. On Thursday morning, Ward 22 representative Josh Matlow called on Ford to quit.
“Toronto needs a new mayor,” he tweeted.
And with Ford vowing not to go anywhere, citizens are mobilizing to share their displeasure. A protest has been planned for Saturday, June 1 outside of Toronto City Hall. According to the Facebook page for the event, titled “Stand Up For Toronto – Let’s Demand Rob Ford’s Resignation,” more than 3,000 people have said they will attend.
