Week 15: When the #$%^ to Fit in a Workout?!

I've decided to make a bold move. I blotted out two hours from my schedule in the middle of the day. I set Outlook for "Out of Office" during these chunks of time and it took about two weeks for everyone who needs to schedule time with me to settle and react. Today I remembered to bring a comb. It's the little things you need to plan for.

Inspired by the very public diets of Toronto's Ford brothers -- Mayor Rob and brother Doug -- a Huffpost contributor has decided to take up their Cut the Waist challenge, and shed 30 pounds by June 18. Our contributor will weigh-in at the beginning of every week (you can read his previous entries here and here) with his progress (including a photograph of his bathroom scales that morning). He would like to be less public, however, about his identity.

Hi Dear Readers,

Just a short note this week to encourage you to watch HBO's The Weight Of A Nation.

I'm learning a lot and I hope you do too. Let's talk about it next week.

One quick thing to share: Because of the many hats I wear -- Dad hat, worker hat -- my daily schedule is squeezed leaving little time for exercise. I used to do cardio 4x a week and now I'm lucky if I can squeeze a single run a week. In the morning I help get the kid off to school and then deal with my US counterparts at work. Then in the evening I'm helping the kid with homework and it's Manila's time to meet with me.

I've decided to make a bold move. I blotted out two hours from my schedule in the middle of the day. I set Outlook for "Out Of Office" during these chunks of time and it took about two weeks for everyone who needs to schedule time with me to settle and react. Yesterday I had my first two hour block, just enough time to drive to the gym, run a hard 5K, shower and drive back. It went well except for the stick of hair that wouldn't go down (think Cameron Diaz). Today I remembered to bring a comb. It's the little things you need to plan for.

Based on what I learned from the HBO documentary, I've got to up my game by about 20 per cent if I am to get off this plateau. Cardio every day. Diligently tracking calories. And meanwhile I await the results of a thyroid test.

Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) is down by 0.3 (a normal A1C level can range from 4.5 to six per cent). Doc says that despite a lack of significant weight loss from a year ago, I'm still a lot healthier than I was. A year ago my AIC was in the high nines. Now I'm about to break into the sixes.

Slow and steady wins the race.
