The best way to spread Christmas cheer is stringing lights for Santa’s reindeer!
Alfred von Hollen’s Christmas lights display, by far the most popular in the Alberta town of Rocky Mountain House, is a popular attraction during the holiday season. But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.
Von Hollen says he won't continue his elaborate display in years to come because it is too physically demanding. But he says he's sad to see it end.
“I try not to dwell on it, because what I’m doing is blanking that out until Dec. 28 when I shut it off for the last time,” he told Global News.
Each year for the past two decades the retired teacher has strung over 120,000 lights on his home and inflated over 100 holiday props in his yard, as a fun way to spread some Christmas spirit in the neighbourhood.
The beautiful and bright spectacle has attracted thousands of people, eager to see the house that would give even Clark Griswold a run for his money.
But making this stunning scene doesn’t come cheap.
Since he began, von Hollen estimates he has spent about $15,000 on electricity alone. The sheer amount of lights are too much for his power breaker, and he uses an extension cord to siphon some of his neighbour’s power.
The lights are on nightly in Rocky Mountain House at 5725 57 Street Close.
