Ryan Reynolds Reveals How One Of His Closest Friends Betrayed Him

Ryan Reynolds is learning just how hard being a parent can be. In a recent interview with GQ, the first-time father revealed how one of his closest friends disrespected his family’s privacy, leading to the end of their 25-year friendship.

“A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” the “Deadpool” actor explained. “I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks.”

Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively welcomed their first child in December 2014 and named her James. Since her birth, they have posted photos of their daughter to social media, but have never revealed her face.

Describing how he felt about his friend’s betrayal, the Canadian star said: “It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out.”

According to the 38-year-old, his friend did it for the money and thought he’d never be caught. However, Reynolds and Lively only sent personal photos to a small pool of people, so it wasn’t too hard to narrow down the incriminating individual. Not only did the shared images include photos of the couple’s baby girl, but also included snapshots of personal moments, such as the family’s first photo in the delivery room.

As a result, Reynolds ended his friendship. “There isn’t really a conversation to have,” he said. “It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.”

Trying to keep personal photos private is a struggle all celebrity parents experience, in addition to dealing with paparazzi. That’s why fellow parents Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard began campaigning last year for the media to stop publishing photos of celebrity kids without their parents’ consent.

Now thanks to the #NoKidsPolicy, big publications such as People, Us Weekly and Entertainment Tonight have joined the campaign.

However, this hasn’t stopped the paparazzi from trying to take photos of celebrity kids. Back in June, Reynolds was hit by a car in downtown Vancouver by a paparazzi. The actor suspects the photographer was trying to get a photo of his daughter before the one his friend was shopping was released.

In response to the incident, Reynolds told GQ: “The whole thing becomes so absurd that all you can do is laugh about it and just go, ‘This isn’t the real world. This isn’t how real things work.’ But it happens to be happening right now. And it will pass. And it does. It passes. It all passed.”
