Stories of life - love, children, death - part of Supreme Court fight for same-sex marriage

WASHINGTON - Stories of love, parenthood, illness and death are at the heart of the case for same-sex marriage before the Supreme Court.Pam Yorksmith rushed her infant son to an emergency room, then had to stand by while hospital officials called her wife, the baby's birth mother, for permission to treat him.Jim Obergefell (OH'-bir-guh-fell) needed a court order to be listed as the surviving spouse on his husband's death certificate.They are among 31 people whose same-sex marriage cases will be argued April 28. Many of them spoke to The Associated Press about their cases.Some sued over the right to marry, while others want states to recognize a marriage performed elsewhere. They include young parents and grandparents, as well as grieving men who already have lost their life partners.
