As Canadians across the country battle the flu, more and more people find themselves searching for something — anything — that will relieve their symptoms.

A large part of feeling so terrible when you have the flu has to do with dehydration, so getting liquids into your body is key for recovery.

"At the onset of the flu, you develop a fever, which can lead to dehydration, causing your mucous membranes to get sticky," explains Dr. Eduardo Dolhun, a doctor based in San Francisco. "Staying hydrated will keep membranes moist, which in turn allows bodies to recover quicker. Increasing fluids can also help prevent dehydration caused by vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive sweating due to high fever, which is especially common for children."

Those flu symptoms, along with a cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, headache, body aches and fatigue, make up the worst of the flu. Dr. Dolhun developed one option to rehydrate sick bodies, called DripDrop, a solution that is full of electrolytes and zinc to boost the immune system as well.

Dr. Dolhun highly recommends still getting a flu shot if you haven't yet, as it is effective against the bugs that can last all winter. He also says good hand hygiene, regularly disinfecting surfaces and toys and avoiding contact with people who are sick are preventative measures — and emphasizes the need to stay home if you start feeling run down.

"You’re most infectious when you first get sick and experience the onset of flu symptoms," he says. "When these symptoms arise, it’s best to stay home, get rest, and keep yourself hydrated. As a general rule you can return to work 24 hours after your fever breaks, however it may require some people several days to feel ready to return to work."
