Part of Toronto's subway system came to a standstill Tuesday after staff found a mystery liquid leaking into a downtown tunnel.
The Yonge-University-Spadina line was closed from Bloor to Union stations between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon due to an "environmental spill investigation" at College station.
Early Tuesday morning, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) spokesman Brad Ross tweeted a photo of the leak.
The closure caused chaos for morning rush-hour commuters, who tweeted photos of long lines at stations and for shuttle buses.
Crews planned to plug the tunnel joint where the liquid was trickling in, TTC CEO Andy Byford told reporters Tuesday, and clean up the track bed. Fire services also took samples of the substance and planned to test it.
Byford said it smelled like kerosene or diesel, leading the TTC to think it might be flammable.
"More than ever, it reinforces the fact that we could not take any chances with this liquid," he said.
By about 1:30 p.m., the line had reopened.
