You've graduated from university and surprise, surprise, you can't land a job. No, sleeping into until 1:30 pm and sort of applying to a few jobs isn't going to cut it. There are other things you can do in the meantime though, things that will help you get that job...and do something productive while you're at it.
1.Make some money! No, working retail or serving wasn't exactly what you had planned when you were a little kid but right now it's a great way to earn some cash -- sometimes even a lot of cash. If you're willing to work long nights and chat up your customers, serving could earn you lots in tips. If you have some retail experience, get a job in managing-this is great on a resume to show your organizational and teamwork skills.
2.Volunteer. No, you don't get paid for it, but it is great experience and you get to make connections and network. Make it relevant- if you want to teach, volunteer in a classroom; if you want to work construction, volunteer for habitat for humanity-they would be more than happy for the help; if you want to work in fashion-volunteer for Fashion Week; sports and reporting, how about those PanAm games coming this summer?
3.Start your own small business for some money on the side. It could prove to be more successful than you think. Had a hobby of woodcarving or metal stamping that you've long forgotten? There are people who will buy it. There is a large DIY fad out there but many people simply don't have the patience-do it for them, set up a store on Etsy, and see what happens.
4.Get a hobby. One that can possibly produce income would be best. There are a lot of websites that offer to teach you how to make a website, or use Photoshop or Excel... these are skills people will like when you are applying for jobs. Technology is the way of the future, after all.
5.Speaking of online classes, if you're not sure what you can do with your undergrad degree, see what certificates you can get. You can usually go to Continuing Education programs at many different universities and colleges. These have a wide range of topics -- from business, to working in fashion, to working in the food industry. Check it out, you might be surprised at what you find.
6.Projects at home. If you say, well I still live with my parents, even better! What better way to give back to the parents who are supporting you through your job search than helping them by refreshing the paint on the walls or doing some DIY projects around the house?
7.Work out! You've been using those same excuses for not getting fit long enough, that's not going to work while you're unemployed-you don't have anything better to do! Since saving money is a must, try to find a low-price gym in your area or look for some online workouts where you can work on your fitness in the privacy of your own home.
8.Apply to jobs. Yes it must be done... try making a time each day to apply for jobs so it doesn't drag down your mind all week. Apply everywhere, even places that aren't hiring. Send in your resume and cover letter, what's the worst that can happen? When they need someone last minute, that resume that came into their inbox two months ago may just be the one they go back to. Don't forget to change your cover letter depending on the job you are applying to-yes it's annoying but yes it does also matter.
