A first-year engineering student at the University of Waterloo has died after being struck by lightning Friday morning.
The female student, whose name has not been released, was struck around 9 a.m. while walking on campus near an area of residences known as Student Village 1. She was taken to hospital, but later succumbed to her injuries.
The student was 18 years old, according to Waterloo police chief Bryan Larkin.
"Everybody here at the University of Waterloo is deeply saddened," university spokesperson Nick Manning told CTV News.
According to CBC News reporter Nick Boisvert, two male students were the first to find the student unconscious after the incident.
Shortly after the incident, the university tweeted a warning to students to stay away from open fields and trees during the storm. It has since cancelled all its orientation and frosh events until further notice.
