These four agreements are very simple, very clear and precise life lessons. They are neither glamorous nor catchy, just lessons for leading a fulfilling life. Remind your children to be fearless, always do their best and always keep trying. The world needs people like that more than ever.
Not that many years ago the first time you were seen by other professionals and colleagues was in an interview, the first day on a new job or in a social setting. Now, it is common for people to Google you or find you on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook to gather up a first impression of who you are before job interviews, as your new position in a company has been announced, or after hearing about you from someone.
A client of mine liked to think in black and white. In her mind, you could either do a job you hate and make a ton of cash, or do a job you love and be dirt poor. No iPhone. It was one or the other. Without knowing it, she had tied the concepts of fulfilling work and poverty together.
But to me, eschewing assumptions has been a way of life. For example, to this day, while driving, I never, ever cruise breezily through a green light. Instead, I follow a lesson I have passed onto both of my sons: "Just because the other guy has the red light, don't assume he's stopping at it."
Why in this day and age do we still form quickly arrived at, negative first impressions about people? And why do we so undeniably feed into stereotypical patterns of labelling people based on appearance, confidence levels, fashion sense and charisma, among other equally irrelevant character traits?
