Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Can someone living with ADHD achieve great things? As an adult with ADHD who recently completed a PhD, I confidently reply: "certainly."
Everyday life was a struggle. "Why is adult life is so hard?" I often wondered.
Often adults will describe situations where they feel less interested, perhaps a little bored, and then they become more prone to procrastination, distractibility and forgetfulness. Against this, adults can often focus much better in novel stimulating situations, and in this way ADHD may be viewed as an "engagement deficit" condition depending on the context.
There is no need to think that, with autism and other anxiety related issues, my son cannot go on to do a job he loves, have friends and even live independently or semi-independently. It's all in how much he is encouraged and given opportunities to explore what he loves to do.

What divorcing spouses and partners don't realize is there are very real consequences of dysfunctional divorce that affect mental, emotional, and developmental well-being and behaviour of children. The effects of divorce trauma become more pronounced the longer a divorce drags on. And two or five years in the life of a child is a huge percentage of time.
Thirty percent of adults with Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) report they were physically abused before they turned 18.This compares to seven per cent of those without ADD/ADHD who were physically abused before 18.
The latest version of the DSM, DSM-V, will be available in the next several weeks, and we are looking forward to some important changes. When we come to the area of psychiatric medicine, sometimes the descriptive label does describe the condition fairly clearly, and sometimes not.
