attitude of gratitude
So many hours and days of my life I focused on what was not working. Then I learned about gratitude. The more I practiced repeating my gratitude lists, the more natural it became for me to see the positives in people and situations, and to be grateful for all the small, wonderful things occurring in my life.
Visiting Tanzania in September changed my perception of what it's really like to go without. The people we met survive with the bare necessities. A roof over their heads, basic clothing and just enough food to survive. Yet, we witnessed such joy and hope in them, and for this, I fell in love with Tanzania.
Remember, no family is perfect. No one is perfect. A little family conflict may be unavoidable for some people. Unless it's gross mistreatment, try to skirt disagreements. Agree when you normally wouldn't, swallow a little pride and be more forgiving. It's only one or two days a year. And remember there are many, many people with no family at all. So if you have family, you already have a reason to be thankful.
One month until Christmas -- and the countdown begins! November 25 is when I typically shift into full tinsel mode. But here's the twist. We've been asked to reign in the gift-giving this Christmas. Can I really do like the people in the movies, and remember the meaning of Christmas without gift-giving?
We're heard it said time and again that an "attitude of gratitude" is one of the keys to a fulfilling life. You might already practice this, or it may not be anything new to you. But sometimes we need a reminder -- or a gentle nudge. So here are some ways you can experience more love and gratitude every day:
Gratitude is a state of feeling grateful towards something or someone, and it comes from the Latin word "gratus," which mean pleasing, agreeable and thankful -- so to be grateful is to be filled with thanks.
Mauril Bélanger, MP, was recently named Honorary Speaker for a day in the House of Commons. He had put his name forward for the official position of House Speaker before his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. He withdrew after learning of his illness. The House of Commons gave Bélanger a standing ovation for his courage, dignity and pride. And they were right to do so.
Yoga practice is as much about the mind, as it is about the body. The ritual of opening your practice with a dedication, moving through poses with intention and finally, finishing with gratitude is familiar to most who practice but here's we how could bring these concepts to the workplace.
I've been lucky to have a fulfilling marriage, a job that I love and a life filled with meaning. But like anyone, I'm familiar with the stretches of hopelessness that can come when life gets to be too much -- or not nearly enough. I began sponsoring Alejandro in Bolivia when he was just five, sure that I'd be improving his life. What took me completely off-guard was the way that he's lifted mine.
As I remember the South East Asian Tsunami and other global disasters which have broken my heart, my challenge has been finding enough peace to sleep at night, while waking with the renewed energy to do my best for those who survive. Somehow, we must all find that place.
