Democracies must protect freedom of expression, which includes the right to blaspheme. Freedom of expression and the right to dissent is either for everybody or for nobody, or the principal falls apart entirely.

While we should be shocked that these atrocities are committed, we should not be so shocked that they are committed within our borders, because this violence really is not as much of a "lone wolf" attack as we think. We are far more entrenched in this barbarous violence than we would have ourselves believe.
Through a western lens of the world, a cartoon is meant to amuse, mask an message or comment or provoke a discussion. Nothing should be off the table, right? However, an illustration of depicting child pornography, or homophobic message or antisemitic views are not innocuous, as they should not be.
The history of crude antisemitism in cartoons began in Europe long before Israel's existence. That it continues to be carried forward today in Palestinian society and Muslim communities elsewhere is a scandal, one that should be condemned by all people of good will.
Why hasn't my Facebook feed filled with at least the same level of indignation about our government's disgraceful treatment of our Veterans as it was about the a tobogganing hill? We must learn to calibrate our anger so it's proportional to the injustice or slight. Let's fight for the things that make life fun for us like tobogganing while also fighting the things that make life miserable such as payday loan companies, multinational corporations, venture capitalists, a failed War on Terrorism and the self-serving hacks in the media and government who enable it all.
