There's no shame in trying to up your game.
Our sense of what is realistic or not might actually limit our own possibility. Consider running a four-minute mile. It was thought to be impossible until Roger Bannister broke the four-minute barrier in 1954. The record now stands at 3:43 and the mile has been run in under four minutes at least 4,500 times.
If we try (by applying for that job, going to the gym or doing something outside of our comfort zone) and don't achieve a 100 per cent success rate, we deem ourselves to have failed. Stop comparing yourself to what society says you should be, and instead create your own measurement system.
What I am saying is, when you make a choice that your future self will not be proud of, lean into the fall and learn from every choice -- both positive and negative. Work to understand your personal triggers and coping mechanisms so that you evolve into the healthier and fitter future self you want to be.
When the email screamed at me from my inbox, I did think about it quite seriously.
