I think it's safe to say that as a society, we are rather risk-averse. We are eager to walk a smoother path, and are naturally drawn to life hacks, shortcuts and workarounds. But are we doing ourselves, and more importantly our children, a disservice by sidestepping the lessons of adversity?
Changing something about your life is a big deal. You might not nail it the first time you try. In fact, you may never be perfect at this thing you want. That's a good thing! A serious mark of strength in a person is the ability to get up off the ground and try again and again.
If we can learn one thing from the Parapan Am athletes, it's that we can fulfill our dreams and find greatness in the most difficult and unconventional of circumstances. But we need to believe in ourselves, first and foremost. Then we need to follow through with hard work and grit. The Toronto Parapan Am Games will be the largest ever held, with more than 1600 athletes from 28 countries. Attend the Games to support the athletes but, more importantly, to be inspired and empowered by them.
Is there a blueprint for "cultivating grit," and are there steps you can take right now to build it within your life? These are questions that come up a lot whenever I give a talk on overcoming adversity, so I thought I would share a few of my strategies with you.
Often times we only hear about highly successful people after they have become successful so we are unaware of their struggles to the top. Defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, grit is the new black when it comes to achieving success. These findings on grit are encouraging reminding us that no matter what our background, what school we went to or our IQ score, hard work and perseverance can make us successful.
