A lovely tribute.
The world still spins, the Habs still might have a decent season, but, for the first time in my life, I will be cheering for my hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. I think being screwed over by a GM and coach is a great primer in discovering what it feels like to be a Leafs fan, to be honest.
Montreal is not the place where an ebony player like Subban can thrive. In a town where blackface is still considered acceptable -- even on the public broadcaster's airwaves, a dark-skinned prodigy in the "white man's game" just can't get the respect nor the remuneration he's earned.
On Thursday night, Montreal Canadiens player P. K. Subban scored the winning goal against the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal. Predictably, Boston fans were outraged. In this case, though, with Subban as one of the few black players in the league, their anger took a sickeningly racist turn.
A face to imagine that perhaps a lot of Montreal Canadiens fans have this morning after the FLAMES' win last night.
