Buyers' criteria may vary depending on their age and location. When it comes to the value of your home, however, certain neighbourhood features have very distinct influences -- positive and negative -- that you should be aware of.
On the morning of Oct. 28, 2015, 12 pedestrians were struck by cars in the City of Toronto. While some would say it's the result of a wet, grey day, this statistic follows an average of six pedestrians being hit each day, a stunningly high number set to increase as density intensifies and our population ages.
It's a very specific feeling when you know you're about to get demolished by a semi on a dark highway in Ohio. Someone in the van said "we're going to die." The world seemed to move in slow motion. There was a body of water running parallel to the road and now, because we had spun, we were facing it. I had time to think about flooring it and taking our chances swimming in the icy water.
With traffic congestion on the rise, many of Canada's highways are in immediate need of overhaul. And, with tax increases as unpopular as ever, road operators in several provinces have turned to tolling to fund the safe, efficient roads that communities need -- and voters expect.
As governments here in Canada wrestle with the challenge of providing high-quality transportation infrastructure, they should increasingly consider public-private partnerships, or P3s. The record shows P3s are more likely to be built on time and on budget, and they offer greater value for money than conventional infrastructure projects.
