Recently there have been a string of celebrities calling out people and institutions for racism. Some seem surprised it's happening to them, thinking their celebrity is a shield. While others are seriously emotionally affected.
The rapper wasn't holding back.
Where are our friends and fans of black music and black people when the partying stops and the subject turns to the reality of being black? When I attend concerts for some of these artists, non-blacks are the ones front and centre, filling more than half of the seats. Switch to a Black Lives Matter march... these folks are nowhere to be found
This isn't who I am. How did I get so skittish that I flinch at the sound of my own voice? How did I lose sight of goals that were so clear to me just a few months ago? How did I let fear and anxiety run my shit? Well, that's a dark rhetorical rabbit hole that I'm really bored of falling in to. There's always one person I can turn to to boss me up: Nicki Minaj.
I used to watch award shows when a lot of the hype was about which artist won and who performed the best. Some of the most buzz-worthy parts of the show would include an artist doing something pretty impressive. This year's MTV Video Music Awards were a little different. I'm not sure if I saw anything impressive, but I did have at least five moments where I was thinking "WTF?"
