Encountering a personality like Trump's is highly unusual. People like him can't rationally exist, we tell ourselves. He possesses a multitude of confounding characteristics that defy his office and position in life. But, with his combination of skills and deficiencies, he did win the presidency, didn't he? Yet we remain incredulous and struggle to come to terms with how this happened.
Divorce is ranked above going to jail or losing a family member as the second most stressful life event you can face. In fact, the death of a spouse or child are the only events considered more stressful. And yet, this doesn't even take into account what divorce is like for those who are separating from someone with a high-conflict personality.
This is not about lowering standards, convictions or expectations that I have made for myself. It is about lowering the expectations I have placed on others. And in the process, allowing people to be the marvelous and wonderful creation they were meant to be.
