Many people don't realize how skin conditions can deeply affect our self-confidence and create emotional challenges. One of the main reasons why, for instance, weight loss efforts fail to such a high degree is that dieters routinely start out with unrealistic expectations. They look at what's being presented to them by commercial weight loss programs or popular television shows and anticipate similarly spectacular outcomes in their own lives.
A new report by Princeton University and Stony Brook University published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science has concluded that there is "very little difference" between the satisfaction of their lives between those with children, and those without. I like to think "satisfaction" is the absence of misery.
The new tsunami hitting shores are Canadian sitcoms bragging they are just like Hollywood comedies. This has always been a problem in Canadian entertainment -- a deliberate lack of respect for what has come before, or an ignorance of it entirely. And this new push to be more like American shows has lead to a breed of Canadian sitcoms that are the worst of both worlds, like a mermaid with a fish head and human legs.
CTV's new sitcom Satisfaction didn't cross any lines. I suspect most people watching it -- male or female -- didn't think about any possible undercurrents. That's kind of my point. Just because we accept it as the norm, doesn't mean it's not worth asking why we accept it as the norm.
