It's time for municipal governments to rethink the assumption that more revenue is needed to fund transit expansion. Savings can be found within current spending envelopes, given the dramatic increases in spending by municipalities and TransLink over the last decade.
"61% of voters in the Metro Vancouver population said no to improving transit. Let's do it ourselves."
This referendum isn't about TransLink's internal spending habits. It's on whether we want to fund public transit to the extent that it'll positively impact our generation and generations onward.
Like it or not, this referendum is the meal that is being served on the table.
Instead of focusing on ways to con the taxpayer into handing more money over via dodgy claims and ballot questions, TransLink apologists should focus on addressing executive pay, delivering projects like Compass Card as promised, and curbing waste.
