NEW DELHI -- Bajaj Auto on Monday launched Bajaj V 15, a 150-cc commuter segment motorcycle that has been in the news for using metal from India’s first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which was scrapped in 2014.
Priced between Rs 60,000 and Rs70,000, the V15 comes with a four-stroke single-cylinder engine with the company’s proprietary DTS-i technology. Nestled in a double cradle frame, the engine churns out 13 NM of torque at 5,500 rpm with power peaking at 12 PS at 7500 rpm.
“The bike delivers 25% more torque than other bikes in the segment. Even with a pillion, the bike will easily pull in any gear,” said Sumeet Narang, vice president (marketing) at Bajaj Auto, during the launch.
The bike has an aggressive stance, thanks to an 18-inch wheel upfront and a 16-inch wheel at the rear, both featuring five-double spoke designs. The V15, available in Ebony Black and Pearl White colours, comes with a beefier 33 mm front fork with a dust cover.
Positioned above the Bajaj Discover 150, the V15 will compete with other bikes in the 150-cc segment such as Suzuki Gixxer, Honda Unicorn and Hero CBZ Xtreme.
The bike sports a 55/60 watts trapezoidal headlamp—the company says that is 60% brighter than rival offerings. It also has a dual-colour LED fuel level indicator, an LED tail lamp and wide handlebars. The large fuel tank of the bike has the INS Vikrant insignia etched on it.
The V15 comes with a rear cowl that can be easily removed with the help of a built-in allen key to accommodate a pillion.
Production of the bike will commence in February while deliveries will start in March. Company managing director Rajiv Bajaj did not rule out the possibility of a bigger-capacity engine on the Bajaj V going forward.
Bajaj Auto has launched three versions of its budget cruiser Avenger in the beginning of the calendar year and the country’s second-largest two-wheeler maker plans to produce 20,000 units of V15 per month.
