Director Mohit Suri can lay claim to an interesting distinction in Bollywood: he has directed 3 "quasi-sequels" — 'Raaz - The Mystery Continues' (2009), 'Murder 2' (2011), and 'Aashiqui 2' (2013) — without having directed the original movies.
'Humari Adhuri Kahani' is, however, not an existential lament about his directorial career. Starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, who were last seen together in 'Ghanchakkar' (2013), as well as Rajkummar Rao ('Shahid', 'Queen'), Suri's latest is a romantic drama which involves an abusive marriage and the resultant extramarital affair.
While the story is entirely too familiar, the presence of strong actors does give us some hope. Staying true to his prevailing style, Suri injects this story with a generous amount of melodrama, with the trailer featuring heightened emotions, not-really-subtle acting, and an overwhelming background score featuring songs that you know are going to play everywhere you go for the next month or so.
The film releases on June 12. Watch the trailer above.
