Anand Teltumbde surrendered before the National Investigation Agency on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dalit intellectual has been remanded to NIA custody till April 18.
The Dalit scholar, who is expected to surrender before a Mumbai court on Tuesday, said the case against him was a ‘criminal fabrication’.
Politicians, activists, Dalit leaders, and intellectuals have condemned Teltumbde’s imminent arrest as tragic, shameful, and an indictment of the ingrained casteism of Indian institutions.
Teltumbde has to appear before the investigating officer on 14 and 18 February.
Teltumbde is an accused in the case, which was filed following violent clashes at Koregaon-Bhima village near Pune on 1 January, 2018.
The arrest had taken place despite the Supreme Court granting four weeks' protection from arrest to Teltumbde which ends on February 11 and it could now attract contempt proceedings from the apex court
The sessions court had rejected his bail application on Friday evening but his arrest has taken place despite the Supreme Court granting him protection from arrest till February 14
Teltumbde, one of the most important writers and intellectuals of his generation, has been accused of being a member of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) by the police
The human rights lawyer was lodged in the Yerawada jail in Pune after his arrest in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence.
