President Ram Nath Kovind said that Mukherjee’s demise is “passing of an era”. Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah also shared messages of condolence.
It is a mark of Mukherjee’s ambition that a long innings ending with India’s highest constitutional post is viewed through the lens of what might have been.
Mukherjee, who had undergone surgery to remove a brain clot, died in a Delhi hospital.
Reports suggest that civilians and police personnel have been injured in the incident.
“Today, more than ever, we need to remind ourselves of that unfettering faith the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, had in Ahimsa and not just tolerance, but mutual respect," the former president said.
This comes after the former president lauded the role of the poll panel saying the 2019 Lok Sabha polls were conducted “perfectly”
Mukherjee said that right from the first election commissioner Sukumar Sen to the present election commissioners, the institution is working very well.
