Toni Morrison
The author of books like Beloved has died at the age of 88.
"Morrison was unapologetically black and exemplified the notion that the black writer does not have to seek white validation in order to be relevant," writes Nadine White.
Morrison, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for her classic Beloved, was one of the best-known and most admired writers in America.
