Akil Patterson

Depunty Director of Sugar Free Kids/ Community Liaison for Athlete Ally/ AHF Mobilizer Baltimore

Akil Patterson is Sugar Free Kids’ Deputy Director and is responsible for establishing relationships within the community and helping the coalition grow in membership, which it has exponentially since his arrival in the Fall of 2014. Akil attended Frederick High School in Maryland, where he was a four-time All-State athlete in football, wrestling, and track & field (shot putter). At California University (Pa.), he was a two-time Division II All-American football player. Before transferring to California, Akil played football for three years at the University of Maryland, College Park where he was a member of2001 ACC Championship team. His teams won 30 games, including three bowls in his three years. Upon graduation, he returned to College Park, where he trained, coached and worked. Akil worked with the Howard County Government before becoming the Community Organizer at Sugar Free Kids Maryland. A lifetime advocate for others in the community, Akil has used his voice to help impact change in sports and serves as the Program Director and Community Liaison for Athlete Ally, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending homophobia through sports.
