Dr. Amy Blackstone

Professor of Sociology. Expert on the Childfree Choice, Workplace Harassment, & Civic Engagement.

Dr. Amy Blackstone is a professor in Sociology and the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine where she studies the childfree choice, workplace harassment, and civic engagement. She is the author of Childfree by Choice: The Movement Redefining Family and Creating a New Age of Independence (Dutton, 2019), along with several dozen peer-reviewed articles and chapters and the textbook Social Research: Qualitative and Quantitative Methods (Flat World Knowledge, 2019). Dr. Blackstone’s research has been featured by a variety of media outlets including public radio, Huffington Post, Ms., The New Yorker, Pacific Standard, TODAY, Fox News, MSNBC, Marie Claire, and many other local, national, and international venues. Dr. Blackstone appeared on Katie Couric’s nationally syndicated talk show Katie, where she was interviewed as an expert guest on the childless-by-choice. Amy lives in Maine with her husband Lance. Together they run the blog "we're {not} having a baby!". They are active in their small town’s vibrant downtown scene where they run the pop-up venue 58 Main in their free time. An amateur oenophile, Amy skated for several years under the moniker Wined Up for Central Maine Roller Derby.
