APOPO is a social enterprise that trains HeroRATs to detect (sniff out) landmines and Tuberculosis (TB). At APOPO's headquarters in Tanzania, the HeroRATs have found more than 3,900 TB patients misdiagnosed by local hospitals who can now receive treatment. In Mozambique, the HeroRATs and their human colleagues have removed over 2,500 landmines and cleared over 7.9 million square meters of hazardous land that can now be safely used by local communities for agriculture, access to water, hospitals, or economic development.
