Abdullah Sharif, an aviation engineer for over three decades, spent the past five years helping to rebuild his homeland of Afghanistan. He served as a diplomat on behalf of the United States Departments of State and Defense, receiving numerous awards for his service. He wrote about the early years of his return to Kabul, where he last lived 31 years before, in an inspirational memoir, Sardar: From Afghanistan’s Golden Age to Carnage. Sharif, in his second book, Return to Kabul: An Afghan American’s Odyssey in Afghanistan, a sequel to Sardar, recounts his fascinating experience as a US Department of Defense official in Afghanistan. He has also authored Kandahar: A Guide to the People and the Province.
